Lightning Time
Published in Library Binding by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (January, 1999)
Author: Douglas Rees
Average review score:

Praise for Lighting Time
This book, simply put, was enjoyable for two reasons. One, it was simple reading. Never does the author attempt to confuse the reader by attempting to put in complicated battles or legal matters, which might be expected. Instead, Rees puts everything in layman's terms. Second, the style of the novel is intriguing. It starts off quickly with the entrance of the main supporting character, John Brown. From there on in, the action is fast-paced with frequent delves into the necessary morality issues. But, most importantly, the novel has a very nice lyrical style to it which causes the reader to feel at ease with the novel and a part of the story. Thus, the novel is highly recommended and I look forward to Mr. Rees's further novel.s

Lincoln Douglas Debates
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Author: Brendan January
Average review score:

An excellent juvenile history of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates
In terms of politics today it is difficult to believe that a politician who served only a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives could become President of the United States by losing an election for the Senate. Brendan January's account of "The Lincoln-Douglas Debates" explains to young readers how this could happen in the 1860s, providing details and context beyond what will be found in a standard American History textbook regarding how Abraham Lincoln became a national figure. January explains Stephen A. Douglas's theory of "popular sovereignty," and how the issue of slavery was of critical importance in this 1858 campaign because of what was happening in "Bloody Kansas."

The strength of this slim volume is how January captures the ebb and flow of the debates as the political argument evolved over the course of the seven meetings. At the first debate in Ottawa Douglas argued slavery could never be abolished except by the states themselves and would be part of the United States forever, while Lincoln accused Douglas of wanting to make slavery legal in every state and therefore a permanent part of the Union. However, at the pivotal second debate at Freeport Lincoln challenged Douglas to answer the question of whether the people in Kansas Territory could declare slavery illegal? The response Douglas gave, which became known as the Freeport Doctrine, was that yes, a territorial government could outlaw slavery. This put Douglas in a dilemma, because while his answer advanced the idea of popular sovereignty it defied the Dred Scott decision, which guaranteed slavery in the territories. The debates continued the positions of the two candidates crystallized. Lincoln held slavery violated the "all men are created equal" idea in the Declaration of Independence and that slavery violated basic human rights. Douglas held that slaves were property and therefore subject to Constitutional guarantees regarding property.

Students will be surprised to learn that even though Lincoln received more votes than Douglas in the 1858 election U.S. Senators were not elected by direct vote at that time. The Democrats controlled the state legislature in Illinois and so Douglas was re-elected. However, newspapers had carried complete transcripts of each debate, which were read avidly not only in Illinois but throughout the nation, providing Lincoln with what amounted to massive press coverage for the 19th-century. "The Lincoln-Douglas Debates" does a fine job of boiling down the rhetoric to specific political principles. January has authored several of the Cornerstones of Freedom volumes covering Civil War topics such as Fort Sumter, The Emancipation Proclamation and the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Students and teachers interested in finding out more about a historical topic can usually rely on this series to be an excellent first place to turn.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Values in Conflict
Published in Hardcover by Clark Pub Co (June, 1993)
Authors: Jeffery Wiese and Jeffrey Wiese
Average review score:

A great Lincoln-Douglas textbook
Amid a forest of mediocre texts and handbooks that do little to improve one's understanding of LD, Wiese's book stands almost alone in providing clear and useful explanations of issues in LD debate.Wiese's textbook is ideally suited to use in the classroom with students who have little or no experience in LD debate.Teachers and coaches who take Lincoln-Douglas debate seriously should not hestiate to invest in this valuable teaching aid.

Great resource for highly innovative take on steam & sorcery
This resource makes a great addition to the rest of the Privateer Press books, discussing the different races, national politics, and alternative rules for this highly innovative world. The pictures are well done, as well, which (for me) is one of the reasons I buy these books! You can't go wrong with this one!

Lock On No.8 : McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II
Published in Paperback by Verlinden Productions, Inc. (01 April, 1990)
Authors: Bob Letterman and Lewis Pruneau
Average review score:

Close up---Very detailed photos of an F-4E Phantom
This book has very nice, detailed color photos of an F-4E Phantom. If you are looking for close-up photos of an F-4 Phantom, this is the book for you. Book covers the exterior, the pilot and WSO interiors, the GE J-79 engine, the 20mm cannon, landing gear, wings/flaps, radar, access panels, etc..... My uncle flew F-4D Phantoms at Homestead AFB (Florida) in the mid 80's and now flys the F-16 Falcon. The first time I saw a Phantom, I fell in love. The only problem Lock On No: books, is that they are about 40 pages in length, I wish the book had more pages.

The Logic of Congressional Action
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (October, 1990)
Author: R. Douglas Arnold
Average review score:

a book which questions democratic accountability in congress
According to John G. Geer, a textbook account of a representative democracy is that representatives attempt to translate the public's view into governmental action. Legislators are supposed to represent and act on the interests of the electorate. Gere cites Edmund Burke's distinction between 'trustee' democracy, in which politicians lead public opinion, and 'delegate' democracy, in which politicians follow the public's will. Jean-Jacaques Rousseau believed that, ''the deputies of the people are not representatives; they are merely its agents". He expressed extreme cynicism regarding the British system of representation: "The English people believes itself to be free. It is greatly mistaken; it is free only during the election of the members of parliament, Once they are elected, the populace is enslaved; it is nothing." To the extent that Arnold's theory of Congressional behavior suggests that it is more necessary for legislators to identify issues that could make them vulnerable to challengers and to find the safe margin of decision making than for them to strictly adhere to the constituency opinion in roll-call voting, the US representative system seems to fall under 'trustee' democracy, and is antidemocratic in the Rousseauian sense.
